  3. OUR APPROACH TO TECHNOLOGY
    What’s new? What’s better? What’s next?

Before we tell you more about the role, we’d like to tell you what we mean by Application Development at Baillie Gifford. In truth it can be many different roles. Working primarily with applications that run on both Oracle and SQL server databases, our Application Development team focuses on inventing software solutions that make our business work better and smarter into the future. We work with advanced technologies like ASP. NET MVC, C# and eID, as well as HTML 5 platforms, Google Angular JS, iOS Mobile Development and Android. And we’re always keen to adopt new technology and experiment. Our infrastructure is constantly being enhanced. We were one of the first companies in the UK to have VoIP, Virtualisation, Blackberries and iPads.

We also work with major suppliers and field trial their new technologies. So we’re looking at how new software works and helping to develop its functionality before anyone else has even seen it.

  4. As we’ve said leading edge systems drive our business. That’s why we’re constantly investing in the research and development of new technologies. So we need you to help us explore the boundaries of what’s possible.

You’ll be right at the heart of our ground-breaking work as you get involved in live projects throughout their full lifecycle. And we’ll give you the freedom to experiment and explore.

But remember it’s not tech for tech’s sake. We want you to get out there into the business and work with colleagues across the organisation to gain a full understanding of their roles and what they need from their technology. Then it’s over to you and your team to create imaginative solutions that really deliver.

  6. "Within the Application Development team, you’ll find a broad range of backgrounds. It’s certainly not all about the tech skills. It’s more about our people, team fit and culture. The firm see you as a long-term investment and they’re willing to put time and effort into your development."

  7. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
    The person behind the C.V.

We’re looking for minimum 2:1 but you don’t need a degree in computer science. It could be in any IT-related subject. We’re more interested in whether you’ve built a website, written a blog or contributed to technical forums, than what you studied. You’ll have a genuine interest in emerging technology and a problem-solving approach to technical challenges.

Yes, you’ll need technical bias, but matched with relationship-building and consulting skills. You must be keen to contribute to our team environment, and collaborate with anyone around our business.

So it’s not all about technical skills and university projects. Tell us about your strengths and experiences, perhaps from an evening job or student society role, and help us see how you’ll fit into our team. We’re looking for well-rounded individuals who have a positive approach to new challenges and enjoy the buzz of collaboration. When we meet you, we’ll also want to hear your thoughts on how technology can make businesses better.

  8. As we’ve said we’re constantly investing not only in the development of new technologies, but also in the development of our people: the 230-strong team of IS professionals who bring that technology to life.

So from the day of your interview onwards we’re interested in you as an individual. Our application process doesn’t include online assessments or telephone interviews, only face-to-face meetings. Once you’re with us, you’ll work closely with senior colleagues who will get to know you, your talents and your aspirations. You’re never just a face in the crowd.

As an independent business that’s owned by its partners, the culture here is different. It’s a business where people matter. Where your personal and professional fulfilment matters. Where your work-life balance matters. Where your happiness matters.

We offer an excellent starting salary that is competitive with other investment management firms. Our comprehensive benefits package includes an annual bonus, generous pension, life assurance, discounted private healthcare, 26 days’ holiday and bank holidays as standard. There’s also a very active social scene, with regular opportunities to enjoy your time mixing with colleagues both in and outside your department.

  9. “You can take on as much responsibility as you want and the support is there when you need it. No-one says ‘you’re a grad trainee’ – everyone is treated the same. But equally you can’t use it as an excuse! My contribution isn’t capped and I’m encouraged to suggest new things.”

  10. DEVELOPING YOUR CAREER
    Steer your own path.

Our graduate development programme lasts for two years and provides opportunities to work on a variety of different software solutions, leading to a permanent role within the team. After a comprehensive induction, you’ll be working on real projects and getting involved in their complete lifecycle. You will also have a mentor to support you throughout your training, and to help you take your career down the path that’s right for you.

From day one of the programme, you can expect broad training modules to support your IT knowledge and skills. Your structured training programme will include a useful overview of investment management to help you understand the context of your role, plus the chance to work towards the professional IOC programme. You'll also receive a breadth of behavioural skills training, including things like time management, team working and presentation skills.

But training isn’t something that just happens during the first stage of your career. Throughout your programme and your career here, we encourage everyone to follow their own interests. That could mean attending a formal training course, signing up to a webinar, going to a conference or working on a new project. You’ll find you’re not restricted to a narrowly defined role in a big anonymous company. With our full support, you’ll take responsibility for steering your own development. That’s because you know better than anyone where you want your career to go.
