  1. BUSINESS OPERATIONS

    WHAT EXACTLY IS BUSINESS OPERATIONS?

  3. THE ROLE
    Exploring our business.

Business Operations is made up of over a dozen interconnected functions that are critical to the success of our business – from liaising with clients directly on accounting and administration matters, and reconciling trades with custodian banks, to processing trades or analysing operational risk.

It’s been described as ‘the oil in the machine’ – not seen on the outside but keeping everything within the organisation running smoothly.

This programme allows you to gain experience with all of these operational teams, and ultimately specialise in one area. We wouldn’t expect you to know right now which team you’ll join in two years’ time.  That’s precisely why our rotational programme provides such exposure. And once you’ve built that foundation, you’re all set to launch your career here in a specialism that’s matched to your talents, interests and aspirations.

As a graduate trainee, you’ll be part of our Investment Operations function (the term we use within Baillie Gifford to describe this multi-disciplinary team).  We find it more straightforward to call the graduate programme Business Operations, however, as it provides exposure to a diverse range of business functions.

  5. "I wasn’t at all sure what I wanted to do after graduation, and didn’t fully appreciate what Investment Operations is. Because it’s so broad, and covers so many different disciplines, the idea of a rotational programme appealed to me as it would allow me to experience different areas of this investment business. It’s an amazing opportunity and I haven’t seen anything like this offered elsewhere."
    Laura Johnstone, Marketing Communications Analyst
Accountancy & Management, University of Aberdeen
  6. During your two-year rotational programme placements vary in length, from a week to a couple of months or more. So you’ll be constantly experiencing new areas and learning new things. And as you progress, you’ll increasingly get the opportunity to add value to the business, contribute to key projects and bring in new ideas.

There’s also constant on-the-job training, as well as study leave to help you achieve professional qualifications such as the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) and Investment Management Certificate (IMC).

Everyone’s journey here is different. We don’t expect you to know what area you want to specialise in when you join us – and we won’t come with any preconceptions either. These two years are about exploring, learning and discovering just where your long term career could take you within Baillie Gifford.

  7. “Ultimately, we’re looking for motivated people who have ideas, initiative and a hunger for learning. The sort of person who spots an opportunity and asks to be involved in, or even initiate, a project. We’ll match your strengths with our business needs. And, because we take a small number of graduates every year, you can be sure that you’ll be noticed, and given real responsibility from day one.”

    and Graduate Programme Sponsor
  8. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
    Endlessly curious.

We’re looking for people who are fascinated by the way organisations work. In terms of your degree subject, we’re completely open-minded, although an interest in business is a must. So it’s about considering how your academic focus, personal skills and career aspirations line up with our own aspirations for Baillie Gifford and its future.

We’re interested in how you demonstrate the way you approach your work. How your consultative style, willingness to learn and problem-solving skills combine to make you the exceptional individual you are. And of course, we want to see how you will fit in with this professional, supportive and collegiate environment where you could make a visible contribution to the success of our business.

In short, we need you to show us how your drive and curiosity about business make you the perfect candidate for our Business Operations programme.

  9. We’re interested in you as an individual from day one. Our application process doesn’t include online assessments or telephone interviews, only face-to-face meetings. Once you’re with us, you’ll work closely with senior colleagues who will get to know you, your talents and your aspirations. In other words, you’re more than just a face in the crowd.

Life at Baillie Gifford is about working hard, not working long hours. We want all of our people to enjoy a healthy work/life balance as they develop a complete picture of the role and our processes, and build up a network of people to support your career.

As an independent business that’s owned by its partners, the culture here is different. It’s a business where people matter. Where your personal and professional fulfilment matters. Where your work-life balance matters. Where your happiness matters.

We offer an excellent starting salary that is competitive with other investment management firms. Our comprehensive benefits package includes an annual bonus, generous pension, life assurance, discounted private healthcare, 26 days’ holiday and bank holidays as standard.

There’s also a very active social scene, with regular opportunities to enjoy your time mixing with colleagues both in and outside your department.

  11. APPLICATION PROCESS
Enough about us, we’d like to hear about you.

    STAGE ONE
Complete a short online application form, attaching your CV and covering letter. We will review your application to find out more about you and assess whether you have the skills, attributes and curiosity to make a good investment operations graduate.

    STAGE TWO
If you are successful in the first phase, we will invite you to our offices in Edinburgh for a first interview with one of our Investment Operations professionals and a member of the HR team. They will look at your CV with you and discuss the academic and professional choices you have made so far. They will also ask you to answer competency-based questions that assess your abilities and experience, as well as present to them on the topic of Investment Operations.

    STAGE THREE
The final stage of interviewing is also the most in depth. You will attend an assessment centre with other applicants which will include a second interview, a group exercise and a personality questionnaire.  You will also have the chance to speak informally to current graduates, managers and HR representatives about Baillie Gifford.
