  3. OUR APPROACH TO TECHNOLOGY
    What’s new? What’s better? What’s next?

Since 20% of our people work in technology roles, it’s no surprise that innovation and cutting-edge technologies are wholeheartedly embraced by everyone within the firm. There’s always a push towards looking for new ideas and trying to incorporate things that are newer and better

With experienced managers providing a strong foundation for new people to learn, the environment is as vibrant as it is supportive. It’s small enough for everyone to make a difference, but large enough for people to become specialists. With leading-edge software, development tools and a schedule of projects, our infrastructure is constantly being enhanced. We were actually one of the first companies in the UK to implement VoIP and Virtualisation technologies. We were also very early to adopt devices like Blackberries and iPads and ensure these were subject to secure enterprise management.

One of the ways our IS team keeps up-to-date is through attending global technology events. For instance, our team visits Silicon Valley each year to learn about new technological innovations which could help drive our business forward.

  4. "Joining the graduate programme, I had expected to do my two years here then move to London. Eight years later I’m still learning and there’s so much more to get involved with. Baillie Gifford is always looking ahead into new technologies so I’m constantly developing new skills and finding new opportunities."

  5. As a member of Technical Infrastructure team you’ll focus on exploring how emerging technologies can shape the future of our business. Our team maintains and develops the entire IT infrastructure. Our platform uses technologies from leading vendors such as EMC, Dell, Splunk, Cisco, Bloomberg, Microsoft, Apple and Palo Alto.

Another great thing here is that we partner with world-class suppliers including Microsoft and Apple. This means we often get involved at a beta stage, helping drive forward product development as well as delivering bespoke solutions.

  7. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
    The person behind the C.V.

We’re looking for minimum 2:1 in an IT related degree. To be honest, we’re more interested in whether you’ve built a website, written a blog or contributed to technical forums than the specifics of what you studied. You’ll have a genuine interest in emerging technology and a problem-solving approach to technical challenges.

Of course you’ll need a technical bias, but this will be matched with effective relationship-building and consulting skills. You must be keen to contribute to our team environment, and be able to collaborate with anyone around our business.

So it’s not all about technical skills and your university projects. Get ready to tell us about your strengths and experiences, perhaps from an evening job or student society role, and help us to see how you’ll fit into our team. We’re looking for well-rounded individuals who have a positive approach to new challenges and enjoy the buzz of collaboration. These are the people who stand out.

When we meet you, we’ll also want to hear your thoughts on how technology can make businesses better.

  8. We’re constantly investing not only in the development of our technical infrastructure but also the development of our people: the 230-strong team of IT professionals in Edinburgh who bring that technology to life.

So from the moment we ask you to an interview to the day you complete your training programme, we’re interested in you as an individual. Our application process doesn’t include online assessments or telephone interviews, only face-to-face meetings. Once you’re with us, you’ll work closely with senior colleagues who will get to know you, your talents and your aspirations. In other words, you’re more than just a face in the crowd.

As an independent business that’s owned by its partners, the culture here is different. It’s a business where people matter. Where your personal and professional fulfilment matters. Where your work-life balance matters. Where your happiness matters.

We also offer an excellent starting salary that is competitive with other investment management firms. Our comprehensive benefits package includes an annual bonus, generous pension, life assurance, discounted private healthcare, 26 days’ holiday and bank holidays as standard. There’s also a very active social scene, with regular opportunities to enjoy your time mixing with colleagues both in and outside your department.

  9. "Our Technical Infrastructure graduates get the chance to do real work as soon as possible. At the same time, they enjoy full support from everyone around them, and our structured training programme sees them learn about different areas of the business. That way, they learn how everything fits together to make Baillie Gifford tick. Of course, the bulk of training is geared to developing technical abilities, but we focus on behavioural skills too – including team working and presentation skills. We care about our graduates. We want them to enjoy life here as they build the foundations for a long-term career with us."
    Richard McGrail
Partner and Head of Information Systems
  10. DEVELOPING YOUR CAREER
    Steer your own path.

Our graduate development programme lasts for two years and provides opportunities to rotate around a number of areas. After a comprehensive induction, you’ll be working on everything from the busy Service Desk to longer term networking projects business-wide. Your mentor will support you throughout your training, and help you take your career down the path that’s right for you.

From day one of the programme, you can expect broad training modules to support your IT knowledge and skills. Your structured training programme will include a useful overview of investment management to help you understand the context of your role, plus the chance to work towards the professional IOC qualification. You’ll also develop behavioural skills including effective meetings, report writing and presentation skills.

But training isn’t something that just happens during the first stage of your career. Throughout your programme and your career here, we encourage everyone to follow their own interests. That could mean attending a formal training course, signing up to a webinar, going to a conference or working on a new project. You’ll find you’re not restricted to a narrowly defined role in a big anonymous company. With our full support, you’ll take responsibility for steering your own development. That’s because you know better than anyone where you want your career to go.
